Marriage, Not Dating Episode 11 Recap

People finally decide to act on their feelings but it’s definitely not smooth sailing for anybody  just quite yet.

Episode 11: Confession (Go Back)

Cold Open: Gi Tae stands in his apartment decked out with candles, balloons and flower petals, holding a bouquet of flowers while Lee Seung Gi’s “Will You Marry Me?” plays in the background. This looks familiar. Gi Tae smiles as he looks at a person, who’s wearing blue high heels, walk down his aisle of candles.

Gi Tae and Jang Mi both kneel in front of grandma, who asks if all this was a lie. Gi Tae tries to take the blame for everything but Jang Mi insists that she’s at fault as well. Jang Mi says that although she didn’t understand why Gi Tae hated getting married so much, after experiencing it first hand, she understands. Grandma asks why she’s getting involved in another family’s business, but Gi Tae says, “She’s a foolish woman who worries for other people first before herself even if she gets cursed at and is beaten”. True that. Jang Mi and Gi Tae take turns insisting that they are really the one at fault and grandma just watches them and laughs to herself. She tells them that it doesn’t look like they’ll end it anytime soon and tells them to do it well for once before getting up and leaving.

Hoon Dong and his mom take Hyun Hee out to eat at a BBQ restaurant. Hyun Hee obviously looks uncomfortable about the location and feigns that the meat’s smell is making her morning sickness act up, even though she hasn’t experienced any morning sickness up until this point. The reason is clear when one of the waitresses run up to her and says that she’s Hyun Hee’s mom. Hoon Dong’s mom leaves in anger and Hyun Hee apologizes about lying since she was worried that mom would be disappointed in her. Mom says, “ The one that I am disappointed about is not because your mother works as a restaurant waitress. What I am really disappointed about it that you are ashamed of your parents.”

Gi Tae and Jang Mi sit awkwardly in his apartment and confirm that their relationship is over. Jang Mi says that now there’s no reason for him to bother her but he asks why she followed him back to his apartment then. She uses Yeo Reum as an excuse saying that she has no need for Gi Tae but she does need his apartment. Yeo Reum arrives and watches them bicker.

Jang Mi tells Yeo Reum that they should go out and eat but Yeo Reum suggests that they eat in since he also has something to tell Gi Tae. Yeo Reum decides that he’ll make some pasta out of ramen and Gi Tae mockingly says that pasta’s not hard to make. Yeo Reum tells him that if it’s that easy, he should try to make it as well. Jang Mi is excited and says that she’ll be the judge. Yeo Reum says that the loser will have to grant the winner a wish and although Gi Tae is hesitant about it at first, after Yeo Reum goads him a bit, Gi Tae agrees.

Commence cook-off. Yeo Reum breezes through but Gi Tae has difficulty with basically everything. It’s funny how he is so precise and so bad at cutting things that Jang Mi has to help him, “If you do it like that, you might have to pull an all-nighter”. They’re so cute. Times up and when Jang Mi tastes Gi Tae’s dish, she gags, so obviously our chef Yeo Reum wins the bet (even though his dish looked like a blob of noodles in heavy cream).

Gi Tae doesn’t want to admit defeat so he says that it’ll be best out of three. The next game will be something that Jang Mi can’t judge by herself, something that’s man-to-man, so what do these two boys decide on, a drink-off! They play “muk, ji, bba” and whoever loses has to take a shot after each round. Sounds like a real smart idea. They both end up a little drunk and on the final round, Gi Tae loses so Jang Mi stands up and drinks the shot in his place.

Yeo Reum is about to say his wish when Gi Tae declares that it’ll be best out of 5. Who knows when this will end? LOL The two of them get sober real fast and have a sing-off. This time, the karaoke machine will decide the winner. Yeo Reum sings his song, but halfway through, Gi Tae cuts him off and starts singing. Jang Mi jumps up and joins Gi Tae since he’s apparently singing her favorite song. It’s fate. Yeo Reum can’t just watch on the sidelines so he joins them and the three have a good time. Gi Tae even tries to “rap”.

Back at the apartment, Jang Mi thanks Gi Tae since she hasn’t had this much fun in a long time while Gi Tae thanks her for the lowest score he’s ever received from a karaoke machine, “What kind of grade is a zero, huh? A zero.” Hahaha. Jang Mi just rubs it in and asks how it is that he couldn’t win a single round. So the two just lightly kick each other until Yeo Reum brings everyone some beers.

Yeo Reum finally tells Gi Tae his wish. He wants to borrow $5000 from Gi Tae so that he can find a new place to stay. Jang Mi thinks Gi Tae has been giving Yeo Reum hints to move out but Yeo Reum says that he likes living with Gi Tae, it’s just the three of them can’t just keep going around together forever. Jang Mi doesn’t understand so Yeo Reum makes it clear to her, “I started living here with the condition that you help hyung. I have to leave this house, so that you can be free, as well”.

Hoon Dong continues to avoid Hyun Hee so Gi Tae tells him to face it head on. Yeo Reum brings up the $5000 again but Gi Tae tells him to leave only when he can with his own ability. It’s hilarious watching Hoon Dong on the side, trying to help Gi Tae keep Yeo Reum from leaving since he still thinks that Gi Tae has a one-sided love towards Yeo Reum.

Yeo Reum reminds everyone that Gi Tae likes to be alone but Gi Tae says that it’s a little annoying but he’ll be patient. Unable to watch Gi Tae get rejected, Hoon Dong shouts out that Gi Tae likes Yeo Reum. LOL When Hoon Dong realizes that that’s not the case, he wonders why Gi Tae is discouraging Yeo Reum from moving out. Yeo Reum truthfully says, “Because if I leave, Jang Mi will no longer come to his house, either”.

Gi Tae’s mom calls Jang Mi’s mom and says that she has something to talk with her about regarding Gi Tae and Jang Mi. We don’t hear the content of the conversation.

Jang Mi and Hyun Hee showcase their best behavior for the shop inspection. A customer walks in and when Jang Mi sees her pink diamond ring, she realizes it’s dad’s mistress. Gi Tae’s mom comes to look for Jang Mi. When mom sees the mistress she turns around to leave but the mistress starts talking smack. Mistress says that mom’s daughter-in-law must be really clueless to realize that the ring wasn’t hers. She even says that since mom lacks dad’s affection, she was hoping that mom would have at least have Gi Tae by her side to protect her.

Jang Mi can’t take it anymore and tells the mistress to shut up. Go Jang Mi! Mom tries to stop her but Jang Mi continues to say that she’s that daughter-in-law and starts defending her mother-in-law. Mistress says that fine, she’ll give mom the ring since mom’s been doing all the bothersome household work for her. Jang Mi gets fired up and mom grabs her hand and tries to take her away. When the mistress asks what mom’s so afraid of that she always avoids her, Jang Mi says that it’s because mistress is dirty.

The mistress slaps Jang Mi and that’s the last straw for mom since who does she think she it to be slapping her daughter-in-law. Mom starts fighting with the mistress right there and then and Jang Mi joins to help her mother-in-law. Mom’s fierce and all the mistress can do is scream for her mother.

After the fight, Jang Mi and mom sit together and mom starts laughing so Jang Mi joins in. Mom says that she really hates people like Jang Mi but she’ll try to embrace Jang Mi one more time so they should start from the very beginning again. When mom gets up to go, Jang Mi watches her and thinks, “For some reason my heart fluttered a little bit. Mother became sincere to me”.

Gi Tae meets with Jang Mi’s parents at their home and explains that his mother doesn’t need gifts or a dowry because she’s realized what’s best for him. All he needs is Jang Mi so mom and dad don’t need to take a loan for the wedding or put the restaurant up for sale.

Gi Tae and dad sit down for some drinks while mom cooks up a storm. Jang Mi comes home and starts freaking out when she sees Gi Tae. She asks what he told her parents so that they’re in such a good mood and he just says that he told them that his family only needs her. Jang Mi thinks that Gi Tae is so generous with his words because they don’t cost anything and they’re insincere. I wouldn’t say that.

Dad tries to open another bottle of makgulli but Jang Mi tries to stop him by saying that Gi Tae has a surgery tomorrow. Gi Tae says he doesn’t but Jang Mi tries to get him to leave anyways. Dad suggests that Gi Tae just sleep over and he readily agrees. So cute!

Hoon Dong meets up with Hyun Hee and tells her that his mom is suspicious of the fact that the child in her stomach might not be his. At his accusations, Hyun Hee tells him to come to the hospital with her since if he can’t throw his family away, she should. I think she means she’ll have an abortion…

Gi Tae shyly comes out of the room wearing Jang Mi’s dad’s clothes. It’s adorable. Mom says that it’s the first time she found someone wearing those clothes to be sexy. LOL Dad has to drag mom to bed so that Jang Mi and Gi Tae can have some alone time.

Gi Tae lays down to sleep on his makeshift bed in the living room and before Jang Mi goes to her room, she scares him a bit by telling him to be wary of the cockroaches that roam around at night. Gi Tae freaks out and jumps on the couch.

Inside their room, Jang Mi’s dad talks about how long it’s been since they’ve shared the same room. Mom just tells him that they can’t let Gi Tae know that they use separate rooms. Dad scoots close to mom and starts hugging her to go to sleep.

Jang Mi can’t fall asleep and on the other side of the door, Gi Tae also tosses and turns. When he sees a cockroach crawling on his foot, Gi Tae jumps on the couch again. Jang Mi gets up and heads to her door but she pulls herself back before she can bring herself to open it. When she’s about to open the door again, Gi Tae scares her by storming into her room. He asks to stay in her room just until the cockroach goes away.

Gi Tae looks around her room and Jang Mi tries to stealthily clean as she follows behind him. He looks at her baby picture and laughs while he jokes that she was sure ugly. It’s cute. He turns on some music and sits down on her bed. Jang Mi asks why he’s sitting there, especially since he wouldn’t even let her touch any of his things. Gi Tae just wonders why she was hovering around the door instead of sleeping.

Jang Mi confesses that it’s because she isn’t used to this feeling. And, no it’s not because someone as “deadly hot” as Gi Tae is sleeping on the other side. She usually sleeps alone because her parents are so busy managing the restaurant. Her parents also rarely interact with one another so it feels like she lives by herself. Tonight is the first time that she’s experienced the whole family falling asleep in one house. She thanks Gi Tae for this and to comfort her, he tries to put his hand on her shoulder. Before he can, Jang Mi tells him to leave. Nice attempt though.

He says he’ll leave after the song ends but ends up falling asleep on her shoulder. He falls onto the bed and when Jang Mi tries to wake him up she ends up in his arms. You know what they say, you can wake a sleeping person, but you can’t wake a person faking to sleep. 😉

Jang Mi gets up and tells a sleeping Gi Tae that his mom called her “my daughter-in-law” and it made her heart flutter. She reaches up to touch his hair but he pulls her in for another cuddle. She asks, “What do I do? I think I like you…” OMO.

The next morning, dad finds Jang Mi and Gi Tae sleeping in each other’s arms. He has to clear his throat twice before they wake up in a frenzy. Mom drags dad out, saying that the two of them couldn’t help it since they’re pulled together by fate like magnets. Remember, their sexual affinity is great! Gi Tae tries telling dad that nothing happened but he has to check under the blankets to make sure. LOL

They all eat breakfast together and mom continues to dote on Gi Tae and keeps feeding him. Even dad wants mom to feed him some food. Jang Mi smiles as she watches how happy everyone is. She looks lovingly at Gi Tae but she realizes something and stands up, asking her parents why they’re doing things they’ve never done before, and goes to her room.

Gi Tae does the dishes for mom in his perfectionist way that looks like it’ll take him forever to finish. Mom asks if Gi Tae has proposed to Jang Mi and tells him that he should do it in a cool way to surprise Jang Mi. Gi Tae doesn’t look like he’s opposed to the idea.

Back at the Gong residence, mom has cut her hair. Dad comes in and asks if it’s true what happened at the department store, that mom really fought with his mistress. Dad can’t believe that mom would do that in front of so many people and that he knew Jang Mi was a ticking time bomb. Dad says he’ll have to get her away from Gi Tae but mom tells him that she has officially accepted Jang Mi.

“That child will sincerely look after Gi Tae. Unlike you, she would never build a house and hurt both sides”.

Oooh do you need some ice for that burn?

Gi Tae gives Yeo Reum the money for him to move out and says that he doesn’t have to pay him back but Yeo Reum says that he’ll pay Gi Tae back no matter what.

Yeo Reum: “The real bet starts now. From now on, I’m going to do it seriously so you should be on your toes and do it also. If your feelings have turned real.”

At work, Jang Mi’s mom keeps distracting Gi Tae with texts to ask about how his preparations for the proposal are going. She wants him to make Jang Mi feel like the female lead from a drama. Hahaha. She even sends him a clip from “A Witch’s Romance” to give him some ideas. LOL He thinks it’s childish but unbeknownst to him, one of his patients has been sitting in his office for a while now and offers him her two cents, that love is childish. She tells him to act quickly since someone might take his girl from him if he takes too long.

Gi Tae heads to the store after work to buy decorations for his proposal. When he sees a plastic rose, he picks it up and starts singing, “Jang Mi (rose), Joo Jang Mi”.

Jang Mi sits alone and wonders what it’ll be like if her and Gi Tae became real.

Mom meets up with the witch Se Ah who tells her that Gi Tae and Jang Mi have been faking their relationship so that Gi Tae can live alone. Mom tells Se Ah that she once thought that but after watching them, there’s no way they are faking it. Se Ah says that she’s meeting mom out of guilt (uh huh) and that Jang Mi has a different guy.

At his apartment, Gi Tae blows up a million balloons. He thinks back to when he ruined Jang Mi’s proposal at the hotel and smiles to himself.

He continues his preparations and as he’s putting up L.O.V.E balloons on the fish take, he says, “Nemo I love you”. Awwwww and hahaha!

He gets dressed and practices his proposal in the mirror. It ranges from, “Joo Jang Mi, will you marry me?”, “Let’s get married” to the most heartfelt, “Should we do it for real? The marriage.”

Gi Tae calls Jang Mi and tells her to stop by his apartment after she’s done with work. She will since she has something to tell him as well. Gi Tae starts lighting the candles and he gets frantic when the doorbell rings…buuuut Jang Mi knows his password…Gi Tae finishes his preparations and unlocks the door. He turns off the lights and stands in the middle of his heart made out of candles holding a bouquet of flowers. He smiles nervously but his face falls when he sees that it is Se Ah who came.

Jang Mi leaves work and Yeo Reum is waiting for her outside. He invites her to dinner but she tells him that she has something to confess to him. She says that the elders think their marriage is real and that she can’t deceive them anymore. Yeo Reum asks if she’s going to do it for real because of them. Jang Mi says she couldn’t and asks, “Do you think Gong Gi Tae is sincere about this marriage?” Yeo Reum doesn’t care about others as long as she’s not sincere.

Jang Mi: “That is the problem. I…It became real. I know I can’t be. I wasn’t going to be, but I kept on wanting to stay by Gong Gi Tae’s side without knowing. I keep thinking that it would be nice if this marriage were real.”

Yeo Reum asks if Gi Tae knows how she feels but she says that she’s telling Yeo Reum first since she thought that was right. Yeo Reum tells her that she did well. He looks over and sees Gi Tae’s mom walking towards them so he pulls Jang Mi in for a hug. Mom can’t believe her eyes and thinks back on the words she told dad earlier about how Jang Mi wouldn’t hurt both sides.

Se Ah tells Gi Tae that she told his mom everything. She tells him it’s over and that she was the only one that could stop him. She proposes to a not-so-happy Gi Tae, “Let’s get married”.

Thoughts:

I’m getting real tired of these misleading cold opens. Sometimes it’s amusing if the cold open is showed exactly the same later but just in a different context but in situations like the one in this episode and in episode 6, I feel like I’ve been cheated. It’s not fair!

We were soclose to watching an entire episode without having to see Se Ah but as soon as she appeared, everything in the episode went awry. She has officially become psychotic. How many times does she need Gi Tae to reject her before she realizes that, no, he does NOT want to marry her or give her his sperm? It’s over. Seriously.

I was glad that Gi Tae’s mom didn’t readily believe Se Ah. She trusted what her eyes saw, that the relationship between Gi Tae and Jang Mi is real. Kind of like how grandma could see the truth behind their lie by watching the way they were treating each other and how they were trying to protect each other. It’s a shame that while mom was going to try and find out the real truth, Yeo Reum had to disappoint me by pulling Jang Mi into a hug to make mom think that Jang Mi is two-timing Gi Tae. This is something that mom cannot forgive, after everything she’s suffered with dad.

This all had to come at the worst time too since mom was warming up to Jang Mi. After their awesomesauce fight with the mistress, they’ve formed a (weak) bond. Mom could see how much Jang Mi likes Gi Tae and how protective she is of him, but by seeing Yeo Reum hugging Jang Mi, that bond has been broken and I wonder how long it will be before mom comes to trust and actually like Jang Mi again?

Aside from those last 15 minutes or so, every scene between Gi Tae and Jang Mi were really great to watch. Gi Tae really stepped it up with the proposal. How great was it that Gi Tae’s preparation for his proposal mirrored Jang Mi’s at the beginning of episode 1, even down to the giddiness and the Lee Seung Gi song? He was finally ready to confess and be honest to Jang Mi about his feelings but then she-who-shouldn’t-be-named had to show up and ruin the perfect proposal.

I loved all of the adorable couple interactions between Jang Mi and Gi Tae. During the cook-off, it’s probably not fair for the judge to be helping one of the contestants but I loved how they looked like a regular couple, just cooking with each other and goofing off. The drink-off was also adorable when Jang Mi drank in Gi Tae’s stead. Only a girlfriend or boyfriend would usually do that. When they went to sing, how cute was it that Jang Mi barely had a reaction to Yeo Reum’s song but as soon as Gi Tae started singing her favorite song, she jumped right next to him and started dancing?

Of course I felt terrible that Yeo Reum had to witness all of this but he knows that Jang Mi’s heart is pointing towards Gi Tae. He should bow out to avoid getting hurt instead of pulling an underhanded move when he saw Gi Tae’s mom, and just after Jang Mi confessed to him about liking Gi Tae as well. *le sigh* All’s fair in love and war, I guess?

Finally, it was so cute when Gi Tae stopped by Jang Mi’s house to talk to her parents about how they don’t have to prepare anything for the wedding since Jang Mi is enough. Awww, totally his true feelings. Gi Tae is really like a son-in-law, having drinking sessions with his father-in-law while Jang Mi just frets on the side. And of course, Gi Tae would be afraid of cockroaches. It was soooo cute when they were having a heart-to-heart in her room and then fell asleep holding each other. Hopefully we’ll get a lot more moments like that in the future and that the storm’s that coming doesn’t last too long.

  1. Zee says:

We finally got our bonding scene with Jang Mi and Gi Tae’s mom! Yay! And it was pretty epic and cat fight-y!
But then Se Ah and Yeo Reum had to ruin it. On purpose! Jags.
Despite the downer ending there were a lot of things about this episode I really enjoyed (what can I say, I’m a KDrama optimist)
The adorable couple moments (just because Yeo Reum was there doesn’t mean they weren’t couple-y)
    Everything at Jang Mi’s parents.
The end when he prepares for the proposal and says “I love you Nemo!”
I have to hand it to these writers – they can give me less cuddling than I want and I’m so happy for any of it that I…forgive and forget?
Anyway. I was really heartbroken when Gi Tae’s mom “caught” Yeo Reum politically hugging Jang Mi (wth do these second leads think, anyway? If you just separate the main leads they will automatically default to you? In what world?)
Thanks for the speedy recap, I’m looking forward to your next one (:
